Galactose is a monosaccharide molecule that, in conjunction with glucose, forms the disaccharide lactose. In nature, galactose is present principally in the milk of mammals. The primary galactose metabolic pathway, known as the Lelior pathway, consists of the GALT, GALE and GALK enzymes. Deficiencies or abnormalities of these enzymes can lead to an inherited condition known as hypergalactosemia, in which the body cannot effectively metabolize galactose.

Galactose is widely utilized in research pertaining to both the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Conditions which galactose has been used to study include Wilson's disease, hepatic cancer and hepatitis C. Galactose residues are also used in the manufacturing of some vaccines. D-Galactose is the C-4 epimer of glucose sometimes used to study senescence.
